Congratulations to the Vargo Family and community organizations that made the Bobby Vargo Memorial Slopitch Tournament a success again this year! With a total of 20 teams, 60 games were played over the two days, with many additional activities available for spectators of all ages. Congratulations, also, to the Town of Kipling and various community groups that made the Canada 150 celebrations such a success! As Canadians, we are blessed to live in a nation that allows us the freedom to celebrate every day of our lives.
Kipling & District Parks and Recreation has made one small change to this year’s Children’s Summer Activities Program. The annual Children’s Summer Activities Program runs Monday through Friday, from July 3-21 for children and youth, ages 5-12 years. We are excited to announce that July 25, 26, 27 will feature a Mini-Sport Camp at a cost of $10/day for participants, or all 3 days for $25! There may be some age restrictions on certain sports, so check your child’s brochure (from school), or pick one up at Plainsview Credit Union. Our Mini Sport Camp includes Atomic Smashbal (volleyball adapted to ages 7-11, with a focus on learning to spike); Flag Football for ages 6-12; and Lacrosse for ages 6-12. All sports will be instructed by certified instructors provided by SVA, Football Saskatchewan and Lacrosse Sask. Pre-registration is absolutely necessary, so get your forms into the Rec Office by July 19th! July 31 – August 4 will be a Multicultural Week, with games and activities from around the world! August 8-25 will return to general programming for ages 5-12 years, with many exciting activities. Parents are reminded to fill out the registration and waiver forms, as well as to send a water bottle and hat with their child each day. Because our program also works in partnership with the Kipling Public Library, parents are reminded to ensure that their child has a library card to be able to take home books each Tuesday afternoon. The Children’s Summer Activities Program is supported by the Community Initiatives Fund, Canada Summer Jobs, Student Summer Works, Southeast Connection Sport, Culture and Recreation District, Plainsview Credit Union, System III Supply Ltd, Gee Bee Construction, Heaton Ready-Mix, Osman & Company Law Office and Trobert Law Firm.

Summer Slam Volleyball Skills Camp is in its tenth consecutive season, August 8-10, 2017. The camp is a developmental camp for boys and girls, ages 11-14 years; as well as a high level experience for males and females 15 years and up. Athletes will have the opportunity to develop and/or refine all the technical skills of the game, learn new fitness and nutrition tips and participate in game play and strategy. Athletes are primarily grouped according to age, with both groups receiving 5 skills sessions, followed by a session of “wrap-up” play on the final day of the camp. Instructors again for 2017 are Braden McLean and Bryan Fraser, both playing professionally in Europe in their 2016/17 seasons. Brochures are available at the Rec Office. The deadline for the early bird rate is July 10 – after that fees increase by $15.
