Teen shot dead in Saskatchewan lake community, suspected shooter also found dead

CANDLE LAKE, Sask. — A family member of a 14-year-old who was killed over the weekend in a Saskatchewan lake community says the teen was shot when people in the home tried to stop a drunken man from assaulting the boy's mother.

Ashley Armstrong told the paNOW news outlet that her sister's boyfriend went to the home in Candle Lake, about 225 kilometres north of Saskatoon, on Saturday night. Armstrong alleges the 49-year-old man began assaulting her sister and pulled out a handgun.

Other people in the home tried to intervene, RCMP said, and shots were fired.

Armstrong said the weapon jammed and someone was able to get the gun away from the shooter. But the teen had been shot twice.

The shooter fled the area. RCMP said officers later learned the man had gone to another home in the resort village.

Police went to that house early Sunday and found the man dead of what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

RCMP said no one else was in the home. And three others who had been in the house where the teen was killed were not seriously injured.

More than 10,000 people typically visit Candle Lake during the summer, but about 840 call it home year-round. Many seasonal businesses had closed for winter the weekend before the shooting.

Mayor Terry Kostyn confirmed on the close-knit community's Facebook page Monday that there had been a tragedy.

"Our focus as a municipality is on well-being of our community," Kostyn's statement said. "We are actively making arrangements to provide access to counselling and resources for anyone affected by these tragic events."

Armstrong said her nephew was a student at Meath Park school. He was a caring teenager who loved animals. He played soccer and basketball and loved to ride his dirt bike.

"He had a heart for everybody and just a kid everybody liked."

This report by The Canadian Press was first published Sept. 14, 2020.
